Phoenix softball player Brianna Hardy and South Mountain golfer Leon D'Souza were named ACCAC Fenale and Male Athletes of the Year by the conference.
Hardy, a freshman from Buena H.S. in Sierra Vista, AZ. was named national Player of the year by the NJCAA in her first collegiate season. She was also ACCAC and Region I Player of the Year and, of course, a first team selection at each level.
Both a pitcher and field player, Hardy excelled at both. In the circle she had a 1.25 ERA and struck out 371 in 207 innings. At the plate she hit .347 with 13 home runs with 46 RBIs while helping lead the Bears to a second-place finish at the NJCAA national championships.
In doing so she overcame a torn meniscus in her knee in the summer of 2018 and even appendicitis surgery just three weeks prior to the Region I tournament.
D'Souza, a sophomore from Clonlara H.S., in Michigan, was selected as NJCAA national Athlete of the Year. He won the NJCAA individual national title two consecutive years, the first to win back-to-back since 1993. The Cougars also won the team title under his leadership.
Outstanding in the classroom, as well, he was a third team NJCAA All-Academic winner as well.
