Volleyball has successful debut weekend

ACCAC volleyball teams had a successful opening-weekend run at tournaments across the southwest Friday and Saturday.

Probably the top accomplishment went to Yavapai which went 4-0 at the Snow Invitational including a huge, 3-1, win over defending national champions, and pre-season No. 1-ranked, Southern Idaho. The Roughriders also defeated Central Wyoming, Trinidad State and Utah State-Eastern.

Meanwhile, pre-season No. 10 Glendale got off to a perfect 3-0 start at the Phoenix Beat the Heat Tournament. The Gauchos posted 3-0 wins over the Benedictine JV, Kankakee and Eastern Florida State.

In addition, Mesa picked up three wins in four matches while Phoenix went 2-1 at its own tournament.

MCC got wins over host Southern Nevada at the Lady Coyote Volleyball Classic as well as East Los Angeles. The T-Birds split a pair with St. John's River State. Phoenix defeated Kankakee and the Benedictine JV, but fell to Eastern Florida State.

Eastern Arizona and Pima both split four matches. EAC played at the Snow Invitational and beat Colorado Northwestern and Western Wyoming while losing to two nationally-ranked opponents, #1 Southern Idaho and #11 Snow. Pima was at the New Mexico Military Institute Classic where it won over Hutchinson and New Mexico Junior College but fell to #13 NMMI as well as Odessa.

Conference action begins this week with a pair of matches Wednesday. Phoenix will visit Pima with Scottsdale traveling to South Mountain.
