Arizona Western squeezed out a win over Mesa Saturday to remain unbeaten in ACCAC men's basketball action and took sole possession of first place.
AZC's Gio Nelson hit a pair of free throws with 18 seconds remaining to put the Matadors on top, 76-75. MCC's Amauray Matthews' late attempt missed and Western became the only team unbeaten in conference play at 10-2, 4-0. Daniel Kiely led the Mats with 20 points. Cash Williams added 18 and Nelson 15. Rajhan Billingsley equaled his career high with 28 points to pace the T-Birds. Earlier in the week AZW topped Cochise, 68-53, as Williams led the way with 21 points. Donte DuPriest scored 12 for the Apaches who are now 7-3, 3-2.
The Matadors will visit Pima Monday night in the lone conference game that night.
In Mesa's other game last week, it beat Glendale, 73-64, as Billingsley and Jok, Jok had 14 each. MCC is one of three teams tied for second at 4-1. The T-Birds are 6-3 overall. GCC was led by Cassius Carmichael with 16.
Glendale is one of the three with 4-1 league marks. The Gauchos raced past South Mountain Saturday, 92-65, getting a huge game from Joshuwan Jonson who pumped in 28 points. Terrell Handy Johnson contributed 19 and Carmichael 16 as GCC improved to 6-3 in all games. Christian Allen came off the bench and led SMCC with 16.
Scottsdale is the other team at 4-1 in ACCAC play. SCC is 9-1 overall. The Artichokes won twice last week defeating Chandler-Gilbert, 67-58, and Pima, 72-66. In the CGCC game, Xavier Fuller continued his red-hot pace with 27 points and added 12 rebounds. Jaden Lee had 26 for the Coyotes. In the Pima contest, a balanced attack aided SCC. Donald Carter, III, and Riley Matticks each scored 14 and Boogie Anderson and Fuller added 13 each.
