Arizona Western surged to the lead in ACCAC men's basketball, although the Matadors' momentum was slowed a bit by Eastern Arizona Saturday.
AZW began the week with a pair of wins, over Cochise, 59-55, and EAC in the first of a two-game set, 90-68. A day later the Gila Monsters returned the favor in a 67-66 squeaker.
Western's win over Cochise came at home as Evan Butts scored 11 points and Yaxel Lendebourg added 10. Stephen Byard did most of the damage for CC with 22, while Patrick Samoura hauled down 18 rebounds.
In the Friday win at EAC Butts tossed in 18 more and Najeb Muhammad contributed 15. Drake Gunn paced Eastern with 13, Qualen Pettus came off the bench to score 11 and Davion Bailey had 10.
In the only other league action last week, Cochise stopped Central Arizona, 82-66, as five players scored in double figures led by Byard with 17.
