Only two men's basketball games were played last week, with Arizona Western sweeping a weekend series at home over Eastern Arizona.
AZW scored an 86-60 win over the Gila Monsters Friday and then backed that up with a 73-59 victory on Saturday. That gave the Matadors the season victory over EAC, 3-1. The two teams split a pair of games last weekend in Thatcher.
In the opener, Western scored 50 second half points and placed four in double figures scoring, including three coming off the bench. Marquis Hargrove led the way with 18 points in a reserve role. Malik Salahuddin added 13 and James Dunlop contributed a double-double with 12 points and 12 rebounds. None of the three started the game. Leo Gerardo was the lone starter in double figures with 10. D.J. Henderson scored 18 off the bench for Eastern and Carl Blanton, Jr., added 10.
In the Saturday contest, Dunlop got to start and produced another double-double. This time he scored 17 points on 6-9 shooting from the floor and added 10 boards. Evan Butts tossed in 14 and Gerardo added 10. Drake Gunn topped Eastern with 16 and Davion Bailey added 12.
