Cochise tops Central Arizona to remain first in men's basketball

  Cochise scored an overtime victory over Central Arizona last week to remain in first place in ACCAC men's basketball.

  The Apaches outscored the Vaqueros, 19-13, in a high-scoring extra period to improve to 4-1 in conference play and 4-2 overall with a 94-88 win. That is just ahead of Arizona Western which has a 6-2 league mark and is 8-2 in all contests.

  Stephen Byard scorched the nets for 36 points to pace CC. He was a torrid 14-22 from the floor and even added 11 rebounds. Jalen Trent added 10 points for Cochise while Patrick Samoura pulled down 11 rebounds. Brenton Woods had a big game for CAC, scoring 27 points with Shakeil Bertrand adding 17.

  Arizona Western had only a non-conference contest during the week. It beat Community Christian, 79-70, behind 24 bench points from Marquis Hargrove and 22 from Evan Butts. Malik Salahuddin contributed 12 points and Mojus Mojus had 10.
