Cochise leads as men's basketball takes a break

  Cochise (13-1, 7-0) won two more times last week to remain atop the ACCAC men's basketball standings.

  The Apaches played at home both times, first edging Phoenix (7-5, 2-3), 62-60, and then scoring a 104-72 win over South Mountain (6-8, 2-5). In the PC game, Jalun Trent was the top scorer with 14 points. Jay Rodgers contributed 13 and Oscar Cluff had a double-double with 12 points and 13 rebounds.  The Bears had a unique situation with Cesar Saenz, Jamar Brown, Michael Rogers and Kyle Harris all scoring ten points. CC then received 21 points from Jonathan Garcia in its win over SMCC. Rogers added 17 coming off the bench, Tyree Watson scored 16 and Stephen Byard popped in 13.

  Arizona Western won its final two games of 2021 with victories over Scottsdale (6-4, 3-3) and Glendale (8-3, 3-3). In the SCC contest, a 99-88 win, Evan Butts tossed in 26 to lead six in double figures. In addition, Nate Duda had a double-double with 16 points and 12 rebounds. The Artichokes Unisa Turay scored 25 and Carson Kelly added 21. Against GCC, Butts added 20 more in an 87-70 win. Yaxel Lendeborg contributed a 11-13 double-double. Adam Hamilton knocked in 24 for Glendale.

  Central Arizona was upset by Mesa (1-6, 1-5), 72-65, at home, but then bounced back for a 74-60 win at Phoenix (7-5, 2-3). Against MCC, Jamison Epps led with 18 points while Brahjon Thompson scored 14 and Brenton Woods had 13. Epps also grabbed ten rebounds. The T-Birds were paced by Timmy Johnson with 18 and B.J. Burries with 15. In the PC contest, John White, Jr., led with 20 points while Thompson added 18 in a reserve role. Phoenix received 16 from Rogers.

  ACCAC action will now take a break until Jan. 5. However, there will be lots of non-league play.
