Top men's basketball teams start new year strong

  The new year began much as the old one ended with the ACCAC's top three men's basketball teams all starting strong.

  First place Cochise (18-1, 9-0) picked up two more wins to run its streak to 10. The Apaches topped Chandler-Gilbert (12-6, 3-5), 100-84, and Eastern Arizona (8-9, 2-7). Against CGCC, Oscar Cluff led with 25 points and 18 rebounds, while Jay Rodgers came off the bench to add 23 points. The Coyotes were paced by Kasey Ruiz who did his work in a reserve roll scoring 17. Then, against EAC, Cluff added another double-double with 18 and 14 while Rodgers collected 18 more,

  Arizona Western, currently in second placed with a 13-3, 6-1 mark, was able to play only once due to a COVID-19 postponement with Phoenix. The Matadors beat South Mountain (8-10, 2-6), 65-52 with Mojius Mojius collecting a 16-11 double-double and Yaxel Lendebourg enjoying one with 10 points and ten rebounds. In addition, Marquis Hargrove added ten points.

  Third place Central Arizona (12-5, 6-2) opened the week with a 90-77 victory over Glendale, as Jamison Epps had a big game with 26 points and 1r rebounds. Brahjon Thompson contributed 16 in a reserve roll. Tyrese Eugene paced GCC with 22. Later in the week, however, CAC needed overtime to get past Chandler-Gilbert, 84-75, as Epps collected another double-double with 19 points and ten boards while teammate Brenton Woods had one with 13 points and 10 assists.

  Pima (12-4, 4-3), currently the No. 4 team in the ACCAC, was not scheduled.
