Arizona Western, Cochise, battle to the wire in men's basketball

It's down to the final two weeks of regular season play In ACCAC men's basketball, but the top two teams face an unusual situation.

Arizona Western (20-3, 13-1) and Cochise (23-3, 14-2) are technically tied if you consider games behind. However CC, even though it is in second place, has fewer games remaining, just four. AZW has a make-up contest with Phoenix on Monday, Feb. 7 and will close the season on Tuesday, Feb. 22 at home versus Central Arizona. The Apaches have no re-scheduled games to make up and are not scheduled on the season's final day. The two will not face each other over the final two weeks.

Both teams won twice last week.

The Matadors ran their winning streak to 11 with victories over Mesa and Scottsdale. First, Western held off MCC (4-14, 2-11), 73-69, as Yexel Lendeborg led the way with an 18-12 double-double. The Matadors also got 14 from Nate Duda and 13 each from Mojus Mojus and Nageeb Muhammmad. B.J. Burries paced the T-Birds with 31. Then AZW knocked off Scottsdale, 92-87, as Lendeborg produced a 23-15 double-double and Mojus added 22. Unisa Turay had 19 for SCC (13-10, 7-8).

Cochise is trying to keep pace and had triumphs over Glendale and Phoenix. In the GCC (13-10, 6-8) contest, a 78-67 win, it was Jay Rodgers leading the way with 21 points. Tyreece Watson added 13. Tyrese Eugene and Eric Blackwell each scored 18 for GCC. Then, the Apaches stopped Phoenix  (12-10, 4-8), 72-65. Rodgers drilled in 28 this time while Stephen Byard had a 17-13 double-double. Jamar paced PC with 26 and 12 rebounds while Cesar Saenz added 10.
