Two races coming down to the wire in men's basketball

It's down to a week and a day in ACCAC men's basketball with battles brewing for the top seeds in both divisions.

Arizona Western is trying to hold off Cochise in Division I, while Scottsdale has a one-game edge over Chandler-Gilbert in DII.

AZA (23-3, 16-1) has won 14 straight, while CC (25-3, 16-2) has won its last four, but will have to rely on someone else to knock off the Matadors to have a shot at a tie.

Last week Western picked up three more victories.

First, it beat Phoenix (13-12, 5-10) 73-72 in a thriller. Najeen Muhammad led with 17 points and Yaxel Lendeborg contributed a 14-13 double-double. PC got 29 from Jamar Brown and 19 from Cesar Saenz. AZW then beat Glendale (14-11, 7-9) 76-67. This time it was Evan Butts tossing in 27 to lead the way, while GCC was paced by Adam Hamilton with 22 points and ten rebounds. Finally, the Matadors had to hold off PC again, this time 64-62, as Butts scored 15 and Lendeborg added an 11-10 double-double.

Meanwhile Cochise is trying to keep pace and won two of its own. First the Apaches beat South Mountain (11-15, 5-11) 105-61, as Jay Rodgers threw in 31. Then came an 82-78 squeaker over Chandler-Gilbert with Rodgers adding 22 more and Tyreese Watson 20.

The loss put CGCC (17-9, 8-10) in a one-game hole to SCC (15-10, 9-8). Earlier in the week the Coyotes had beaten South Mountain 70-58 with Isaiah Somers leading the way with 15. The Cougars got 16 from Elijah Melendez.

Scottsdale (15-10, 9-8) won twice last week in its quest for the DII top seed. First it won at Eastern Arizona (12-15, 9-13) 94-87 with Carson Kelly popping in 24. EAC got 32 from Mohamed Niang. Then the Artichokes topped Pima, 88-81, with Tyree Tyler going 12-13 from the floor, including 5-6 on three-pointers, for 29 points. He also hauled in 16 rebounds.
