Although no teams are unbeaten overall, Yavapai and Chandler-Gilbert have begun the ACCAC softball season 8-0 in conference play.
Following a non-conference loss to Southern Idaho all the way back on Jan. 28, YC (16-1, 8-0) has run off 15 straight wins, four last week, all in five innings. In fact, the Roughriders have had only two games go the regulation seven innings and both of them were on opening day at the Southern Nevada Tournament.
During the past week, Yavapai out-scored its four opponents, 78-2. It began with a 22-0, 30-0 sweep of Paradise Valley (0-6, 0-6). In that twin-bill YC piled up 49 hits and featured a combined no-hitter by Emily Darwin and Abby Cruz. Then the Roughriders topped Arizona Western (5-10, 0-6) 15-0 and 11-2.
Meanwhile, Chandler-Gilbert (9-1, 8-0) and Mesa (0-8, 0-8) were having a slugfest of their own in the first game of a Saturday doubleheader. That one went to CGCC by the football-game-like score of 24-18. The Coyotes failed to score in only the top of the second, and the T-Birds came up empty only in the bottom of the sixth. Those were the only two half innings with no runs. Alanie Omelas hit two home runs and drove in five for CGCC while Camryn Quilling had three hits, including a home run, and knocked in eight for MCC. The second game was won by Chandler-Gilbert by the more normal score of 7-5.
Prior that that wild pair of games the Coyotes had another high-scoring date, this time with Glendale (6-4, 5-3). CGCC won 14-11 and 10-2 (5). Chandler-Gilbert scored four in the bottom of the seventh to pull out the win in the opener.
