Three in softball have just one loss as season draws near 1/3 mark

Three teams have just one conference loss apiece as ACCAC softball approaches the one-third mark of the season. Yavapai, Central Arizona and Eastern Arizona all have just one defeat.

YC (21-2, 13-1), which had been on a major roll heading into last week, was cooled off by Phoenix (15-3, 13-3) which ended their 19-game winning streak with a 2-1 win in the first game of their doubleheader. All of the scoring took place in the third inning. After Yavapai's Makena Riggs hit a solo home run, PC's Ali Ashner responded with a two-run shot which Brianna Hardy made stand up with two-hit, 11-strikeout pitching. YC took the second game, 9-2, as Riggs hit another out, as did Jasmine Moreno and Ashley Fields. Aubrey Chavez had three hits for the Bears.

CAC (20-11-1) ran its winning streak to nine. First, the Vaqueras took a pair from Chandler-Gilbert (9-9, 8-8). In the opener, a 16-7 (5) win, Nicole Ley, Bella Garcia and Sabrina Garcia all had three hits and Brooke Williams homered and drove in five. Five different players for the Coyotes had two hits each. In the nightcap, Central scored seven in the first and two in the sixth en route to a 9-2 win. Ana Rodriguez had three hits, including a home run, and drove in four. CAC then took two from Paradise Valley (1-13, 1-13) by 6-0 and 12-2 (6) scores. The first game saw Rodriguez collect four hits and Bella Garcia three with three driven in. In the second, Rodriguez homered and collected three hits and four RBIs.

EAC (19-3, 11-2)  ran its streak to six with a pair of wins over Scottsdale (2-10, 2-10). The first game, a 15-0 (5) win, saw Christa Zagala throw a five-inning no-hitter. She was supported by Gabby Romero, Cheyenne Cunningham and Solymar Navarro who all had three hits. The Gila Monsters took the second game, 11-1 (5) as Emma Roach collected three hits.

After its split with Yavapai, Phoenix took two from Mesa (2-14, 2-14) but not before surviving a major scare from the T-Birds. The first contest was a 16-4 (6) win for the Bears as Ashner and Chavez each had four hits and cracked a pair of home runs. PC actually hit seven out during the contest. But it was the second game that MCC came close to pulling a major upset. Trailing 3-0 entering the bottom of the sixth, Alanie Ormelas hit a grand slam home run putting Mesa on top, 4-3. Phoenix, however, rallied with three in the seventh for a 6-4 win. Hailey Chavez led for PC with three hits while May Obata had two for MCC.
