COVID-19 strikes ACCAC women's basketball

  COVID-19 raised its ugly head last week among ACCAC women's basketball teams last week, forcing the postponement of five of the ten scheduled contests.

League-leading Central Arizona (12-2, 5-0) had both of its games delayed, against Glendale (3-14, 1-6) and Chandler-Gilbert (6-9, 2-4). Second place Pima (12-3, 5-1) was not scheduled to play and third place Arizona Western (14-1, 4-1) saw both of its meetings with Phoenix (5-10, 1-5) and South Mountain , (2-7, 0-5) pushed aside.

  The top team to actually see action was Eastern Arizona (17-2, 8-2) which is tied for third with AZW. The Gila Monsters won twice, topping Mesa (9-6, 4-4), 72-49, and Cochise (5-9, 2-5), 89-47. In the MCC contest, Ajae Yoakum led the way with a 14-11 double-double, while Sydney Wright scored ten coming off the bench. Mykah Anderson and Jayla Johnson paced the T-Birds with 13 and ten points respectively. Against Cochise, Catarina Ferreira poured in 21. Alexyss Newman had a 16-10 double-double off the bench. Corina Suarez Tudela was the Apache's' top scorer with 15.

  In a re-scheduled game, Scottsdale (9-3, 3-1) beat South Mountain) 51-35, as Alyna Benevides-Johnson led with 14 points and Elysia Fleetwood added 12. SCC, however had its contest later in the week with Phoenix postponed.

  Mesa was able to get another game in as it swept past Glendale, 72-57, as Johnson scored 23 and Stacey Begay added 20 points and 15 rebounds. GCC was topped by Clarissa Lopez with 16 points.
