Arizona Western, Mesa, clinch top seeds in women's basketball regionals

  The top seeds in the Region I tournaments have already been decided as the regular season for women's basketball comes to a close Tuesday.

  Arizona Western (28-1, 18-1) and Mesa (19-7, 14-5)  claimed the top spots in divisions I and II respectively with wins over the weekend.

  AZW topped Chandler-Gilbert (7-20, 3-14), 63-45 to give the Matadors a two-game margin over Central Arizona (23-5, 16-3) and in the process ran its winning streak to 24 straight.

  Mesa faced a grind of four games in six days, wining all and running its current hot streak to 11 victories in 12 contests. The biggest was a 73-65 triumph on the road over its top challenger, Pima (19-9, 12-7). The next afternoon MCC claimed the top spot in the division II regional with a 63-53 win at Phoenix (8-21, 3-16).

  The two division brackets will be announced Wednesday.
