With a week to go in the regular season, Arizona Western maintains a slim lead in ACCACC volleyball, but has played two matches less than its top challengers.
The Matadors are 9-2 in league play and 15-6 overall, after splitting two matches last week. Close behind are Chandler-Gilbert and Scottsdale both at 10-3 in conference matches. One match behind those two are Glendale and Pima, both at 9-4.
AZW dropped its first match last week to Yavapai, 3-2. Anny Montano-Hurtado led the way for Western with 16 kills, while Daniella Jimenez Paz added 12. Tylor Iosua added 14 digs. Kierslynn Wright pounded out 22 kills for YC. She also led in digs with 16, the same number as Brooklyn Holland. The Matadors bounced back with a 3-0 win over Eastern Arizona. Montano-Hurtado again led with 12 digs while Allesandra Arellano contributed 10 digs.
Chandler-Gilbert, 15-3 in all matches, has won five straight including two last week. The Coyotes first topped Phoenix, 3-1. Celeste Miller drilled 18 kills and Jazmyn Tate had 16. Tate also added 15 digs. CGCC next edged Yavapai, 3-2, Miller had 23 more kills and Tate 18 with Miller chipping in with 26 digs.
Scottsdale, 14-4 overall, split a pair last week. First, SCC was edged by Pima, 3-2, despite Brooklyn Casey drilling home 20 kills and adding 18 digs. Kylie Ostrovsky added 25 digs. The Artichokes rebounded with a 3-1 victory over Phoenix. Shauna Rath and Kamilah Anderson led with 10 kills each and Ostrovsky added 24 more digs.
Scottsdale travels to Arizona Western Wednesday in the only matchup among the league's top three.
