Arizona Western squeezed out a 3-2 victory over Yavapai Wednesday to capture the Region I, Division I volleyball championship.
Trailing two sets to one, The Matadors took the final set, 15-10, and will now face the champion from District 7 for the right to move on to the NJCAA National Championship. The location and opponent for that match has yet to be determined. The complete match scores were 23-25, 25-22, 22-25, 25-16, 15-10.
AZW was led by Anny Montano-Hurtado who had 12 kills. Daniela Jimenez Paz added nine. Tylor Joshua contributed 12 digs while Montano-Hurtado had 11 and Allesandra Arellano chipped in with 10.
Western is now 17-7 for the year while YC ends with a 14-13 mark.
